SGI expands Lustre file system support, joins OpenSFS

SGI logo SGI has announced that it is expanding its support of the Lustre high performance, distributed, parallel file system and will provide "level 3" and "complete end-to-end coverage" for customers. This brings the company's support of the open source file system to the same level as CXFSTM, SGI's own scale-up clustered file system.

SGI has also joined OpenSFS, a non-profit mutual benefit organisation dedicated to high-end, open source, scalable file systems. OpenSFS is currently concentrating on Lustre and hopes to increase collaboration between Lustre developers and companies and support its own release of Lustre.

Lustre was a Sun developed file system which Oracle acquired when it bought Sun in April 2009. It continued to market Lustre but in January there were reports that Oracle had ceased development of Lustre. In the wake of this news, WhamCloud, a Lustre specialist, announced it would lead a community release of Lustre 2.1.

In February, WhamCloud and OpenSFS announced they would collaborate on that community version. This work is ongoing with weekly meetings between the developers from Bull, Cray, DDN, LLNL, SGI, TACC, Whamcloud and Xyratex.
