SEP open sources parts of its backup solution

Backup and data recovery specialist SEP AG has announced that it has released several components of its SEP Sesam backup software to the open source community. The SEP Sesam Storage Server consists of two modules; the Sesam Multiplex Stream-Server (SMS) module and the Sesam Transfer Protocol Server (STPD) module.

According to the company, releasing the API and command line interface as open source will allow users to directly access the STPD server and "permit users to develop their own management tools and create their own unique backup environment". The company's SEP client has already been released under the GPL.

By open sourcing the software, the company says that it is complying with its obligation to European law, which stipulates that all businesses and institutions have to have the ability to recover and read their data without a third-party. Georg Moosreiner, Chairman of SEP AG, said, "That is why we are providing the open source community with the source code for our Server/Master Server modules. Basically, the STPD is the brain of the software. Our users now have the added security that their backed up data will always be usable."

All of the SEP modules are licensed under version 2 of the GNU General Public License (GPLv2). The Windows client, GUI and database modules continue to be licensed under a proprietary license and remain under SEP AG copyright.
