Ruckus Wireless Logo Ruckus Wireless, an American network equipment supplier, has now released its Zap wireless performance tool as open source. Zap was originally developed by Ruckus Wireless to monitor the behaviour of real-time IP-based video streaming applications on wireless networks. The company says that it is releasing the tool as open source to "encourage further development of advanced testing tools that provide a better understanding of actual wireless network performance."

Bill Kish, chief technology officer and co-founder of Ruckus Wireless said, “As good as Zap is, by releasing the code as open source, we believe the software community can make it even better, perhaps even incorporate it into new commercial testing tools". Zap works by measuring packet loss and the inter-arrival times of controlled bursts of packets which the tool sends out. The resulting network traffic statistics can be used to measure the effectiveness of various applications, such as streaming video and VoIP. Zap is currently integrated in wireless LAN systems from Ruckus Wireless, including its ZoneFlex products.

Zap source code is hosted on Google Code and is released under the Simplified BSD License. A black paper from Ruckus Wireless called "Characterizing Wireless Network Performance" is available on request.
