Ruby creator joins PaaS company Heroku

The creator of the Ruby programming language, Yukihiro "Matz" Matsumoto, has joined Heroku, the cloud application platform provider, where he will work as the chief architect for Ruby. The news release states that Matsumoto will, in close collaboration with the Ruby open source community, continue his work on the Ruby scripting language he designed in the mid-90s. The creator of Ruby will keep his post at Japanese e-commerce company Rakuten's Institute of Technology, and he will also continue to work as a researcher for the Network Applied Communications Laboratory.

Founded in 2007, start-up company Heroku offers Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) solutions for Ruby and Rails applications and probably leads this market segment together with Ruby/Rails company Engine Yard, which is also based in San Francisco. Heroku has also started to support other technologies, such as the Clojure programming language and the server-side, event-driven Node.js JavaScript framework. Heroku says that it is operating more than 150,000 Ruby applications on its cloud. Salesforce paid $200 million for Heroku when it took over the company last January.
