Roadmap for Jetty 6, 7 and 8

The Jetty developers have posted a new roadmap for their open source Java servlet container. Originally Jetty 7 was intended to move to the Servlet 3.0 specification as noted in the Servlet 3.0 Proposed "Final" Draft. Because of the move to the Eclipse Foundation and delays in the Servlet 3.0 specification, the developers have decided that only Jetty 8 will be Servlet 3.0 compatible, later in the year.

Jetty 6 is the current stable release for Servlet 2.5 and Java 1.4. It's considered to be the recommended branch for established, production-ready projects and is released under the Apache 2.0 license.

The current development release is Jetty 7 which is based on Servlet 2.5 and Java 1.5. It's released under the Apache 2.0 license and the Eclipse 1.0 license and can be distributed under the terms of either. Some Servlet 3.0 functions are included in Jetty 7 using the Servlet 2.5 container without the need to use Java 1.6. Some of the Jetty integrations and distributions will remain at Codehaus, while the cometD client and server are now part of the Dojo Foundations cometd.org project. The developers recommend using Jetty 7 for starting new development projects.

Jetty 8 is the current experimental branch of Jetty and is also licensed under both the Apache 2.0 and Eclipse 1.0 licenses. Development of Jetty 8 is being kept in parallel as much as possible with its predecessor so it represents the same server, but will be built with Java 1.6 and Servlet 3.0. A stable version of Jetty 8 is expected to be available in the first quarter of 2010.
