Rhomobile 2.0 now available for developing platform-independent phone apps

The Rhodes 2.0 development framework has completed its beta state and is now available for production use. Written in the Ruby programming language, Rhodes allows developers to create applications for various mobile platforms (Android, Blackberry, iPhone/iPad, Symbian, WebOS and Windows Mobile). The applications are developed using Ruby as well as HTML code. The new version is the first to support bi-directional HD audio and video streams, and includes a meta-data framework that enables developers to create customised and dynamic database schemata.

While earlier versions of Rhodes were available under a dual licence (GPLv3, commercial), the framework has now also become available under the MIT licence. The commercial variant no longer exists. However, the RhoSync synchronisation server, which is required for synchronising contents with data that is stored offline, is a commercial product. Minimum server cost for an app with 100 users is $10,000. In addition, RhoHub provides a development environment for Rhodes via SaaS (Software as a Service). Rhodes developer Rhomobile is responsible for both of these products.
