Several months of work have culminated in the release of Replicant 4.0 0001, the latest version of the completely open source distribution of Android. The new version is based on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and introduces support for the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy S2. On the Galaxy S, the camera is now supported and improvements to the telephony stack benefit all supported devices.

The Replicant project removes all non-free components, such as wireless and other hardware drivers, from the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and seeks to replace them with a stack comprised completely of free software. This process can limit the support available since there are many devices without open source drivers for components such as the wireless hardware. In the announcement blog post, the Replicant developers are calling for new contributors to get involved in the project as their team is realtively small at the moment.

Images for version 4.0 of the Replicant ROM are available for the Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S and Galaxy S2 devices. Installation instructions for these images are provided on the Replicant Wiki.
