Red Hat releases beta version of Enterprise Linux RHEL 5.2

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5.2 has entered the beta phase. The latest version of the Linux distribution for enterprises supports more hardware and reportedly provides improvements several areas such as virtualization, clustering, encryption, and security/logging. The desktop has also been freshened up and contains the latest versions of programs including OpenOffice, Firefox, and the Evolution PIM client. Laptop owners will be happy to hear that support for suspend and hibernate modes has been improved. The beta version of RHEL 5.2 requires a 2.6.18 series kernel.

The release notes provide a detailed overview of the changes and innovations. Although Red Hat subscribers can use their upgrade option in the Anaconda installer to test drive the beta version, Red Hat recommends a fresh installation. The Linux distributor points out that there will be no support for a subsequent upgrade from the beta version to the final version. The beta phase is expected to last until May 7. The final release of RHEL 5.2 is expected in early summer.
