Red Hat contributed 275 change sets and 27591 changed lines in OpenStack's recent "Essex" release of the Infrastructure-as-a-Service (Iaas) software, placing it third in the list of contributors to that release. The analysis sheds light on the development activity within the OpenStack project. Red Hat comes in behind Rackspace, one of OpenStack's founders, and Nebula, a company formed to create appliances based on OpenStack and OpenCompute.

The contribution is surprising because Red Hat is not a member of the OpenStack group. It is, though, reported that Red Hat, along with IBM, will announce membership of the organisation at next week's OpenStack Design Summit and Conference. In terms of change sets, Red Hat comes higher in the rankings than HP in fourth place, who are rolling out an OpenStack public cloud in the coming months, and Canonical in fifth place, who are switching to OpenStack for their Ubuntu Cloud offerings. In terms of lines, Red Hat maintains third position, followed by Citrix, Midokura and then HP in sixth position while Canonical slips to eleventh position.
