Red Hat and Microsoft collaborate virtually
Red Hat and Microsoft have mutually certified each other's virtualisation solutions. Last February the two competitors announced the collaboration. The two firms say they took this step in response to market demand for greater interoperability in heterogeneous IT environments. The companies are also collaborating in support of various combinations of operating systems.
Certification is provided for guest systems using Windows Server 2003, 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5.4 with KVM – Red Hat’s preferred virtualisation technology – as well as RHEL 5.2, 5.3 and 5.4 guests on Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V, Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V and Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2. The quality label also covers applications that the vendors have certified for their respective platforms.
A blog post at Microsoft's Port 25 open source community website notes, however, that certification currently only covers Red Hat under Hyper-V in the emulation mode. This means that the solution does not yet use Microsoft's Linux driver, which allows the Linux guest system to get around hardware emulation and interact directly with the hypervisor.
