Red Hat has announced the availability of a beta version of Red Hat Storage 2.0, the second version of the company's integrated storage appliance, version 1.0 of which was launched in December. Red Hat Storage is based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and GlusterFS, which the company acquired last year.

New features in Red Hat Storage 2.0 beta include unified file and object storage in a single storage pool, compatibility with Apache Hadoop deployments and improved reliability and performance. New features also enable users to use Red Hat Storage as the storage layer for virtualised RHEL installations.

Red Hat Storage 2.0 beta is available for Red Hat subscription customers and can be downloaded as an evaluation version from the Red Hat website. It is available as a Storage Software Appliance (SSA) and as a Virtual Storage Appliance (VSA). Red Hat has not announced when the final version will be publicly released. For the AGPL-licensed implementation of GlusterFS, see the Gluster.org web site.
