Red Hat The now released Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV) 3.1 fully supports using the web portal for managing host systems that are used in virtualisation. This means that Red Hat has eliminated the last dependency on Windows systems from RHEV; in RHEV 3.0, which was released in January, the web interface that could be used with different browsers was still new and only available as a Technology Preview with no official support. Its predecessor, the Administrator Console, required Internet Explorer to operate and has been dropped in 3.1.

The new version of RHEV also offers Storage Live Migration; this feature allows administrators to migrate the storage areas that are used by virtual machines (VMs) from one SAN storage domain to another without having to terminate the VMs. However, the feature is still classified as a Technology Preview and its use is therefore not covered by the Red Hat support agreement. Also new is the "Live Snapshots" feature that allows snapshots of a VM's current state to be taken during operation to make life easier for software developers and testers. Red Hat has also integrated a range of changes that improve the cooperation between RHEV 3.1 and the Red Hat Storage Server appliance.

According to the release announcement, RHEV 3.1 offers increased scalability and supports guest systems with up to 160 logical CPUs and up to 2 terabytes of memory; the new version owes these improvements to the fact that its core structure is now based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3, which already supports such powerful guests. The more modern core structure also enables RHEV to support some of the AMD and Intel processors that have been introduced over the past few months. The new version of RHEV offers improved desktop virtualisation support (VDI/Virtual Desktop Infrastructure); among the improvements are auto-start features for virtual desktops and optimisations for WAN (Wide Area Network) operation.

Red Hat announced that SAP has already certified the new RHEV for SAP Business Applications running on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Further new features are listed in the announcement of the new RHEV, in its documentation, and on a promotional web page; the web page offers a 60-day trial version of RHEV to registered users.
