Red Hat has made a new version of its Enterprise MRG (Messaging, Realtime and Grid) product available. Red Hat Enterprise MRG 2.2 is based on Linux 3.2 which includes patches that were developed in the kernel's real time tree. The Messaging and Realtime components are used in the banking sector and other areas where transactions have to be processed within reliable time frames. According to Red Hat, the Grid capabilities control clusters that search for natural resources, render feature movies and compute new chip layouts.

The new version of the product also introduces a High Performance Networking (HPN) capability which prepares the product for supporting Remote Direct Memory Access over Converged Ethernet (RoCE). This will allow remote memory access over the network with less processing overhead. The Grid component of MRG, which is aimed at clustering applications, can now use Apache Deltacloud to access more computing resources on demand.

Other improvements include better Java performance in the Messaging component of MRG 2.2 and updates to the administrative interface. The update also fixes two security problems with the Apache Qpid daemon which is included in MRG. These vulnerabilities could allow attackers to perform a denial-of-service (DoS) attack and bypass client authentication on the server.

Red Hat Enterprise MRG 2.2 is optimised for use with version 6.2 or later of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), but it can be also used with RHEL 5.7. The Messaging and Grid components of the product can be used with Windows. An overview of the supported platforms for the different components can be found on Red Hat's web site. A full list of features is available in the release notes.
