Dojo - The Dojo Toolkit, the Javascript AJAX framework, has seen a 1.2 release. The three elements of Dojo – Dojo core, Dijit widgets and DojoX extensions – have all been updated with over 1100 issues addressed. Dijit components have been visually enhanced, while DojoX gets a new grid widget. DojoX also now supports JSON/REST, CouchDB, Google searches and feeds and Amazon S3 as datastores.

This is the first release under the leadership of Peter Higgins, after Alex Russell, original project lead left in August. The Dojo 1.2 release is already online on Google Ajax Library and AOL's CDN Javascript distribution sites and release notes and downloadable versions are on the Dojo web site. Dojo is licensed under either the new BSD licence or the Academic Free Licence.

Picasa For Linux - Although not open source, Google has updated its Picasa image management program for Linux. Picasa does use the open source WINE Windows API layer, though, to allow users to run the Windows Picasa code on Linux; Google contribute patches to WINE to help enhance its compatibility with Picasa.

Because of this, Picasa for Linux is visually very similar to the Windows version. New in Picasa 3.0 is web album synchronisation, better upload management, retouching and red-eye removal tools and the ability to add watermarks to images. Picasa for Linux does have Linux-specific enhancements too, with faster launching, better storage management and better integration with GNOME and KDE desktops and Firefox 3. Picasa for Linux 3.0 is currently in beta and installation instructions are available from Google.
