Raspberry Pi logo The Raspberry Pi Foundation has announced a new version of the popular ARM-based mini-computer board with twice the memory of previous versions. The revised board will replace the current Model B variant but will retain the $35 price tag and all other elements of the Raspberry Pi Model B design: two USB ports, HDMI port, SD card slot and Ethernet port.

The additional memory should make the Raspberry Pi more capable of running more memory hungry operating systems, for example Android 4.0 and later, while existing applications should run somewhat better. Applications which have found themselves with insufficient memory to run the GPU and CPU at the same time should also find things easier running on the new double memory boards.

The Foundation says that people with outstanding orders with either RS Components or E14/Farnell should now receive the new boards. The new memory-doubled board is being manufactured in the UK at the Sony UKTec plant in South Wales.
