In a blog posting, US security company Rapid7 has announced that it will provide $100,000 of funding for up to seven, as yet unspecified, open source security projects in 2012. This effort, referred to as the "Magnificent7", will see the first round of winning projects evaluated during the UNITED Security Summit, due to take place in San Francisco, 19-20 September 2011.

Rapid7 will deliver funds to the chosen projects in three phases. After an initial outlay, additional funds will be made available when two pre-agreed milestones are achieved. Further details are available in a press release from Rapid7 and a document describing how prospective projects should apply is available to download. Applications should be emailed to oss@rapid7.com and the deadline for the first round of submissions is 9 September 2011.
