Rackspace logo By introducing a software development kit for .NET developers and an API for PowerShell developers, Rackspace, operator of the OpenStack-based cloud platform, has entered into direct competition with Microsoft's Windows Azure, the "natural" home for cloud applications in the .NET development space. As the products don't differ greatly from those on Windows Azure in terms of their technical specifications, Rackspace's likely main target is existing Rackspace customers who also have in-house .NET or PowerShell development facilities.

The Rackspace Cloud SDK for Microsoft.NET SDK includes an API, introductory guide, reference manual and sample code. The SDK can be started from Visual Studio using the NuGet extension manager. The "PowerClient" PowerShell-based API client software cooperates with the OpenStack-powered Rackspace servers. Rackspace plans to make the SDK into a full API for all OpenStack deployments; currently it handles Identity, server provisioning, block storage, file storage, and basic networking operations. The SDK is published under an MIT licence.
