RHQ logo The RHQ project developers have released version 4.4 of their open source monitoring framework. The update features several changes and availability improvements including the addition of two new AvailabilityTypes: UNKNOWN and DISABLED. These types allow users to mark resources whose current availability is not known and those that are disabled – for example, during planned maintenance outages – so that they do not show up as false alarms.

Support for triggering alarms after a certain amount of downtime has been added. Reports such as Suspect Metrics, Recent Operations and Recent Drift can now be exported in CSV format. Other changes include faster availability reporting and checking, the ability for plugins to request an availability check for a resource, and improvements to the JBoss AS 7 plugin, which has also been renamed.

The developers also note that users upgrading from version 4.2 must first make a manual change to their database before installing the new version; details are given in the release notes. A full list of new features as well as known issues are provided in the release notes.

RHQ 4.4 requires Java 6 and is available to download from the project's SourceForge page. RHQ is licensed under the GPL, with some parts individually licensed under a dual GPL/LGPL licence. According to the project's roadmap, the next version, RHQ 4.5, is planned for August, and will feature more REST work and support for running on JDK 7.
