Nokia has announced the release of Qt 4.8.0, its cross platform application and user interface framework. This release is not accompanied by a new release of the Qt SDK – version 1.2 of the SDK will follow in January 2012.

There are four specific highlights in the new version of Qt: Platform Abstraction provides a layer that simplifies porting to new windowing systems; improvements to Qt Quick speed up UI design and application development with various ready-made components; the Qt version of WebKit, 2.2.1, has improvements to HTML, CSS and JavaScript; and Threaded OpenGL enables the rendering of OpenGL without holding up the execution of the main thread. There are also additions to the API, plus new classes, functions and macros.

Full documentation is available on the new Developer Network web site, as is a list of the new features in Qt 4.8. This latest version is available to download for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X, with the source available under the terms of the GPLv3 and LGPLv2 licences. A commercial licence is also available for the development of proprietary software. Currently still hosted by Nokia, the Qt code will soon move to the Qt Project site.
