Making the Linux desktop visually harmonious will become easier when Trolltech's Qt 4.5 arrives in early 2009, with the announcement that QgtkStyle has been added to Qt 4.5's development tree.

QCleanlooks was introduced in Qt 4.4 to be visually consistent with GTK in the Gnome desktop. But QCleanlooks only addressed one GTK theme and back in May, Jens Bache announced QgtkStyle, a plug in for Qt 4.4 which used the themes of GTK directly, so a QT application could look identical to the currently selected theme. In Qt 4.5, the plan is to drop QCleanlooks and replace it with QgtkStyle.

The Qt 4.4 plug-in will continue to be developed in alongside the Qt 4.5 addition, but as a separate project, for developers who want to use the stable Qt 4.4. The most visible improvement will be in applications like Skype and Opera, which will now fit in on a Gnome based desktop.
