Python for iOS Software developer Jonathan Hosmer has released updates to his Python for iOS apps that include various fixes and improve overall Script Editor syntax highlighting performance. Hosmer, who works as a programmer at Blizzard Entertainment, offers two different Python integrated development environment (IDE) apps for devices running Apple's iOS mobile operating system.

As their names imply, Python 3.2 for iOS is based on version 3.2.3 of the programming language, while Python 2.7 for iOS uses the 2.7.3 release of the environment. Both of these are Universal apps, meaning that they are designed for both iPhone and iPad devices.

In version 1.5 of the apps, all of the modules that had dependencies on shared objects, such as multiprocessing, sqlite3 and others, are now said to be working correctly. Other changes include fixes in the Interpreter and Script Editor for problems with input/raw_input, as well as improvements to file operations. A problem that caused the apps to crash when loading the Script Editor tab has also been corrected.

Currently priced at £0.69 each, version 1.5 of the Python 3.2 for iOS and Python 2.7 for iOS are available from Apple's iTunes App Store. The apps are compatible with the iPhone 3GS or later and all iPads, and require version 5.0 of iOS or later.

Hosmer's Python for iOS apps are not the only Python IDE apps available through the official iOS App Store. For example, Pythonista, which is based on Python 2.7, was recently updated to version 1.2. That update added a new "Source Code Pro" font option, improved the keyboard on the iPad, implemented a new line space setting for the editor and introduced support for the larger screen on the iPhone 5 and new iPod touch devices.
