The Python developers have released version 2.6.6, the latest and last maintenance release of the Python 2.6 series; from now until October 2013, only security fixes will be released for this branch of the Python family. Python 2.7 will now be the only actively maintained branch of Python 2.

As the last maintenance release, Python 2.6.6 fixes a large number of issues in the core language, built-in modules, libraries and documentation. Among the dozens of fixes is the back-porting of a fix for potential path handling problems (CVE-2008-5983), fixes for import semantics, better output behaviour for sys.exit() messages, Unicode related corrections and better memory handling for threads.

Full details of the issues addressed are listed in the NEWS file for Python 2.6.6 and the new release can be downloaded from the announcement page as source or as Windows installers for 32 and 64-bit Windows.
