The PyMT developers have announced version 0.5 of their Python multi-touch user interface library. PyMT 0.5 supports Windows 7 and Mac OS X multi-touch APIs and, in this version, now supports Linux multi-touch kernel events, which were introduced in the 2.6.32 Linux kernel.

Making use of hardware accelerated OpenGL, the LGPL licensed PyMT is able to render touchable user interface components including basic elements such as buttons, toggles, lists, sliders, file browsers and more advanced kinetic lists, object scattering and virtual keyboards. The library then manages the user's touch interaction with these components in an appropriately responsive way.

Other new features of the PyMT 0.5 release include new widgets for lists, images and a "Spelling Keyboard" which offers spelling corrections and word completion. The developers have also introduced a new abstracted graphics library as part of their development of OpenGL 3.0 compatibility, improved performance and stability, lowered memory usage and updated, revised and enhanced the documentation, which now includes runnable examples of PyMT code. More details are available in the release notes and PyMT 0.5 can be downloaded from the project's web site. Installation instructions are also available from the web site.
