Quirky Logo In a post on his blog, Puppy Linux founder Barry Kauler has announced the release of version 1.0 of Quirky. Kauler says that, while the Quirky Linux distribution is in the same family as Puppy Linux, it's a "distinct distro in its own right."

Quirky 1.0 was built using the same Woof build system as Puppy Linux 4.3.x and later and is aimed at developers as a platform for trying out "some quirky ideas". Compared to Puppy, for example, which is intended for most users, the Quirky distribution includes fewer kernel and video drivers, but also includes a number of programs from a normal Puppy release.

Kauler notes that, "I'm not really aiming to please anyone except myself – or rather, it will be nice if many people like Quirky, but given that it is the plaything for me to try ideas, it cannot be expected to cater for everyone". The developer says that he hopes that the distro will keep getting smaller with each release and that, while it "may not have any practical usefulness", he hopes to embed the distro inside the Linux kernel.

More details about the release can be found in the release announcement. Quirky 1.0 is available to download from the Puppy Linux project site as an ISO image file.
