Puppy Linux The Puppy Linux development team has released version 5.1.2 of their independent Linux distribution code-named "Wary". In a post on his blog, Puppy Linux founder Barry Kauler says that, in hindsight, he should have labeled the release as version 5.2 due to the number of changes it includes. However, it's worth noting that a 5.2.x branch already exists which is based on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS "Lucid Lynx" binary packages.

Built using the Woof build system, Puppy Linux 5.1.2 is based on the 2.6.32-40 Linux kernel and is primarily a bug fix release; updates have also been made to the included software. Package updates include version 1.7.0 of the Pmusic music player, version 0.6 of the Wcpufreq frequency scaling tool, Pburn 3.3.4, and Precord 6.1.3. While not included by default, a PET package is available for Firefox 4.0.1.

An older version of Mozilla's SeaMonkey "all-in-one internet application suite", version 1.1.18, with a number of add-ons is included – the older version was chosen due to its small size. The developers note that SeaMonkey 2.1, currently at a first release candidate stage of development, will be made available as a PET package as soon as it is officially released. Support for rsync has also been restored.

Puppy Linux is a popular small release that is usually just over 100 MB in size, it can run entirely from RAM and its primary focus is ease-of-use. The "Wary-series" of the distribution focuses on supporting older hardware, placing an emphasis on "incremental improvements and bug fixes rather than quantum changes". It can boot from several types of media, including USB flash drives, hard disk drives and a LiveCD. Built-in tools are included to create bootable USB versions, create new Puppy CDs, or to remaster a new LiveCD with different packages.

Details about the update can be found in the official release announcement and release notes. Puppy Linux is available to download from the web site and is made available under the GPL/LGPL licence.
