Red Hat logo Red Hat has announced the availability of a public beta version of Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.0 (RHEV 3.0). The release is based on the KVM hypervisor integrated in the Linux kernel and on the open source virtualisation management system from the oVirt project.

The company says that the major innovations in RHEV 3.0 include the new virtualisation manager written in Java, a "power user portal" for end users to provision virtual machines, a RESTful management API, and more refined administrative capabilities in the management software. The SPICE protocol for the rendering of virtual desktops now uses less bandwidth and also provides enhanced support for Linux desktops.

RHEV 3.0 supports up to 160 CPU cores and 2 TB of RAM on a host system; up to 64 virtual CPUs can be allocated to guests. Performance has been improved in networks as well as on systems with a lot of memory and heavy I/O loads, now that KVM network stacks have been moved into the kernel; "transparent huge pages" and a para-virtualised interrupt controller also help to improve performance.

More details about the public beta of Red Hat Enterprise Visualization 3.0 can be found in the official release announcement.
