Project Kenai a casualty of Oracle acquisition

Sun's Project Kenai, an open source collaboration and project hosting site, is to be shut down as a public service as Oracle takes it "inhouse". The news came in a separate detailed webcast on Oracle's Java Developer Tools strategy and in an announcement on kenai.com. The service, launched in beta in September 2008, offered hosting for open source projects on a JRuby and Rails based stack and was integrated into Netbeans 6.7 as a collaborative development tool.

"Kenai today is a good idea but we don't think it is quite working" said Ted Farrell, Oracle's Chief Architect and Senior Vice President for tools and middleware.The plan is to close the public facing version of Project Kenai and bring the project "inhouse" where, Farrell says, there are a number of internal projects which are a good fit for Kenai. Oracle will work on Kenai with these projects and "flush it out a little bit" solving Oracle's own issues. It will then decide if there is any value in releasing a public service. Details of how the site will be closed down will be posted on kenai.com in the near future.
