Prism logo The Mozilla Foundation has released version 1.0 beta of its Prism software. Formerly called WebRunner, this program closes the gap between local applications and web applications. Under Windows, Linux or Mac OS X you can, for example, use Prism to run web applications directly from the desktop or the dock. They then become dedicated program icons and can be accessed directly, without using a browser's navigation bar or having to type in a URL. Web sites can also be treated in this way and assigned a direct launch icon.

A Firefox browser lies behind the program, with its user interface reduced to a minimum. Prism can be downloaded from the revised project page as either a Firefox add-on or standalone application. Installed as a Firefox add-on extension, Prism adds a – Convert website to an application ... – option to the Tools menu. This option lets you convert opened web applications or sites into desktop applications.

A change from version 0.9 is that, among other things, you can change typefaces and proxy settings and optionally delete personal data. Yahoo already uses Prism in its client for the Zimbra email and groupware server.
