PostgreSQL logo The PostgreSQL developers have released a first alpha of version 8.5 of their open source database system. The developer release contains 36 patches. With its new approach of releasing alpha versions, the PostgreSQL project intends to give advanced users early access so they can test and report problems with new features and new code as early as possible.

The alpha versions are not stable and unsuitable for production use. They are, therefore, only available in source code form. Some binary versions may be released at a later date. Three or four further alpha versions are scheduled for release within a couple of months.

The current alpha offers deferrable unique constraints and the output of the EXPLAIN command is now available in XML and JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) format. Hex inputs and outputs are now available for BYTEA type, the pgbench benchmark tester is now multithreaded and the build environment and documentation have received a number of improvements. More information about the new release can be found in the release notes.

Development work on the free, object-relational database began in the 1980s. It was given its current name in 1996. The project uses the BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution) licence, and the system runs under Linux, Unix, and Windows. The current stable version is PostgreSQL 8.4.
