PostgreSQL 8.4 on the home straight

PostgreSQL logo The PostgreSQL developers have published a first release candidate for version 8.4 of the free database system with a final version due later this month. The release candidate from the PostgreSQL Global Development Group includes a number of bug fixes to the previous beta release, including the elimination of some crashing bugs and changes in the handling of NULL values being passed to internal functions to prevent denial of service attacks.

The pg_migrator tool, which allows PostgreSQL databases to be updated between versions "in-place", has also seen a number of issues fixed within the database and the developers would like reports on how the tool is working for other users. An RC1 version of pg_migrator has been made available.

The PostgreSQL object relational database began development in the 80s and appeared as open source in 1996 under its current name. The project is made available under a BSD licence and runs on Linux, Unix and Windows. The current stable release is 8.3.7.
