The PostGIS development team has announced the release of PostGIS 2.0.0, described as "twenty-six months in the making". PostGIS is a set of software tools that adds support for geographic objects to the PostgreSQL database system. It follows the Simple Features Access specification from the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) and has been under development since 2005.

The new version includes features such as 3D and 4D indexing, integration with the PostgreSQL 9.1 extension system and typmod, a geo-coder optimised for 2010 US Census data from TIGER, and topological models to handle objects with shared boundaries. PostGIS can now analyse raster data and compare raster to vector data in the database. The developers have also added vector functions and the ability for index-based high performance nearest-neighbour searching, while improving other areas of the application.

The developers have stated that they "aren't maybe even sure that they are ready to make this kind of commitment, not so young, and not when we have so much more living to do" but they have released the update nonetheless. PostGIS 2.0.0 can be downloaded for Windows and Mac OS X, and in source code form. It is licensed under the GPLv2 with some included libraries released under several other open source licences.
