PolarSSL, a small C-based SSL library designed for embedded devices, has reached version 1.0. PolarSSL is highly modular, allowing it to be customised to developers' needs, and is able to fit a complete modular TLS stack in under 60 KB of program and use less than 64 KB of RAM. Dual licensed under the GPLv2 and a commercial licence, the C-based library has been ported to operating systems such as Windows, Linux, OpenWRT, iPhone, XBox and Android and CPUs including Intel, PowerPC, MIPS and 68000.

PolarSSL began development as XySSL in 2006, but the original author, Christophe Devine, had to stop maintaining the project and it was taken over and renamed PolarSSL in 2009 and development continued. Now the project has reached version 1.0. The developers say that users of the previous stable versions will find a lot of new features and functionality, better integration with third party software, added abstraction layers and cleaned up code and the separation of the software into modules. Other enhancements are detailed in the 1.0 announcement's change log.

PolarSSL 1.0 is available to download from the project's download page along with documentation, including a tutorial and design documents.
