Following the release of the third generation of GNOME just under two weeks ago, the GNOME Project's plans for the next development milestone are firming up. The project will stick to its usual six-monthly release cycle and preparations for the next major revision will be carried out in a version number series carrying an odd second digit. According to the current draft schedule, the first 3.1x version will be released in May. This will lay the groundwork for GNOME 3.2.0, which is scheduled for release on 28 September.

The "module proposal period", a standard feature of GNOME 2 development, will disappear, to be replaced by the "platform-wide feature proposal period", which will be used to discuss functions which affect the platform as a whole – that includes merging new software components which would previously have been discussed as part of the module proposal period. An insight into enhancements which are currently under discussion or have already been developed can be found in the roadmap and on the overview and features pages for version 3.1/3.2 on the wiki.

The GNOME Project has also reorganised its release team in order to breath new life into the development process. Karsten Bräckelmann, Frédéric Crozat, Lucas Rocha and Vincent Untz are relinquishing their roles and will be replaced by Alejandro Piñeiro Iglesias, Javier Jardón and Colin Walters. Luca Ferretti has also graduated from "trainee" status. Frédéric Péters has taken over the role of release manager.
