Novell open source programmer Jonathan Pobst has announced the release of version 0.2 of his simple Pinta painting application for Gtk modelled after Paint.NET. The first Pinta update includes a number of updates and new features over the initial 0.2 release from last month.

Pinta 0.2 features enhanced layer and history pads, multi-threaded adjustments and effects rendering, and better Mac OS X integration. New tools, adjustments and effects include the Paint Bucket, Recolor, Line, Zoom and Pan. Levels, Curves, Brightness/Contrast, Hue/Saturation and Posterize have been added to adjustments, while new effects include Ink Sketch, Oil Painting, Pencil Sketch, Gaussian Blur and Glow.

Pobst also says that the latest release isn't all his work, but that Pinta has attracted several contributors that are helping the application mature more quickly and that they are already working to merge requests for the upcoming 0.3 release.

More details about the release can be found in the release notes. Pinta 0.2 is available to download for Mac OS X, openSUSE and Ubuntu and requires Mono. Windows is also supported and requires Gtk# for Windows and Mono for Windows. Pinta is released under the MIT X11 license.
