PiTiVi Logo The PiTiVi development team has released version 0.14 of its open source video editor for Linux. According to developer Thibault Saunier, the first release of the 0.14 series is a major release that improves the application's overall usability and includes several new features.

PiTiVi 0.14 adds the ability to preview video, audio and image files before importing, and improves support for audio and video effects: users can now use any of the effects provided by GStreamer in their videos. Saunier notes that the user interface for managing effects "will improve in future releases".

The rendering and project settings dialogs have been completely redesigned, and the welcome dialog now helps users either start a project or load recent projects in just two clicks. Other changes include the addition of a "best fit" zoom button, a progress bar when loading projects, faster project timeline loading, and the ability to jump to an exact position in the timeline and to specify custom aspect ratios and frame rates.

Due to its dependency on GStreamer, the developers strongly recommend that users install the latest official GStreamer libraries and plugins "for the best user experience". Videos made using PiTiVi are available on the project's showcase web page.

More details about the latest release can be found in a blog post by Saunier, in the news file and in the release notes. PiTiVi 0.14 is available to download (direct download) from the project's mirror – at the time of writing, the PiTiVi download page still shows version 0.13.5 from 16 September 2010 as the latest release. PiTiVi is licensed under the LGPLv2.1 and documentation is provided.
