The Phusion developers have released the final version of the Phusion Passenger 3.0.0 Apache or Nginx module for deploying Ruby based web applications. David Heinemeir Hanssoon, creator of the Ruby on Rails framework describes Phusion Passenger as "Still the easiest way to deploy a Rails application or to run multiple locally". It allows a developer to deploy multiple Ruby on Rails or Rack applications while using the industry standard Apache web server to handle HTTP requests. The new version of Passenger improves performance by as much as 55% compared to the previous version, introduces a watchdog to the architecture to ensure stability and offers zero-downtime web server restarts

These and other enhancements have been detailed by the developers in a series of blog posts ( 1, 2, 3, 4, 5), including how to run and support multiple Ruby versions using Passenger, how the program supports "smart spawning" for processes, how Passenger differs from other Ruby web server support options and explains the idea behind the stand-alone Phusion Passenger Standalone version. Instructions for installing Phusion Passenger are available and the software is licensed under the GPLv2.
