Phoronix has released version 1.8 of its Test Suite. A major new feature in version 1.8 is the graphical front end which makes it easier for users to benchmark their systems; previous versions have been controlled from the command line. The developers have added a number of new tests and there are over 80 test profiles; according to Phoronix, over 50 per cent of the code base has been revised. Further details of the 170 changes are available in the Change log.

The Phoronix Test Suite is a collection of benchmarks for Linux, Mac OS X OpenSolaris and BSD based systems. In addition to common tests such as the compilation of large software packages, the test suite also includes specific benchmarks for testing RAM speed, hard disk performance, graphics and video/audio encoding. The suite is licensed under the GNU GPL3 and a database of results for comparison purposes is available on the Phoronix Test Suite site.
