PhoneGap/Cordova logo The PhoneGap/Apache Cordova developers have released version 1.6 of the open source HTML/CSS/JavaScript application framework and runtime for mobile devices. The new release fixes a problem with local storage on the iPhone's iOS 5.1; it was discovered that PhoneGap/Cordova's local storage had become somewhat temporary when Apple changed memory allocation behaviour with embedded WebKit applications.

Of longer term impact is the project to unify the implementations of Cordova's JavaScript APIs; each platform had previously maintained its own set of JavaScript APIs within the project despite 90% or more of the code in each one being identical. This unification is called cordova-js and was initially integrated for the Android platform in PhoneGap/Cordova 1.5. In 1.6 it is now integrated with the iOS platform. Cordova-JS "paves the path for public plugin API and associated tooling" said Brian LeRoux, one of the PhoneGap development leads. More background on Cordova-JS is available in a blog post.

The developers at PhoneGap recently explained that PhoneGap is a distribution of Apache Cordoba and that, in the future, the former may acquire additional tools which are not part of the, currently incubating, Apache project. The new release also sees the Blackberry support synchronised with other PhoneGap platforms, and compass support added for WebOS. PhoneGap/Cordova 1.6 also sees numerous bug fixes on most platforms, along with updated documentation. PhoneGap 1.6 is available to downloadDirect download and is hosted on the Apache Git server.
