Percona has announced an early access release of a PAM authentication plugin for MySQL. Unlike the Monty Program plugin also announced today, which apparently only supports MariaDB, the Percona plugin supports MySQL 5.5.x, Percona Server 5.5.x and MariaDB 5.2.x. The Percona PAM authentication plugin is able to authenticate using operating system user (pam_unix), LDAP server (pam_ldap), RSA SecurID server or other PAM accessible authentication methods. Percona says it is calling the plugin "early access" as it does not have the full feature set but is, however, functional.

The current version of the plugin does require that users are created within MySQL even when authenticated over PAM. Percona says this restriction will be removed in the final version. Version 0.1 of the GPLv2 licensed plugin is available to download as binaries for 64-bit x86, RPMS for RHEL5 and RHEL6, and as source code. Documentation is also available.
