Zoom Pentaho's new data visualisation in action

Pentaho has announced version 4.5 of its Business Analytics software. Based around Pentaho's open sourced analytics platform, the new version adds new data integration and visualisation APIs to all editions, but the new interactive visualisations have only been added to Pentaho's Professional and Enterprise versions, which are available with an annual subscription. Pentaho says that the enhanced APIs should make customisation of all editions for specific business needs much easier, and also allow for third party visualisations and scriptable data source logic.

The new visualisations can include location data in the dataset, enabling geo-mapping. Other new visualisations are heat grids and scatter/bubble charts. Interactive analysis of visualisations is now assisted by lasso filtering, zoom and attribute highlighting in all chart types.

The data integration improvements are available only with the Enterprise edition and focus on "big data" issues. These include new and simpler deployment options for distributing the software across Hadoop clusters and support for secure Hadoop clusters. There are also improvements in NoSQL database integration, with the ability to read, write and report on data with Apache Cassandra, DataStax and MongoDB.

Pentaho's community editions are available to download; the company also offers prospective subscribers 30 day trial downloads for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. Pricing is only available by requesting a quotation.
