GNU Free Call logo David Sugar, GNU Free Call architect, has announced the availability of version 1.0 of GNU SIP Witch, a peer-to-peer VOIP (Voice Over IP) call server. GNU SIP Witch has been developed as part of the GNU Telephony project and has been selected as a component of the GNU Free Call architecture. GNU Free Call, a Free Software Foundation project, was launched in March and aims to be a free software alternative to Skype.

The 1.0 version is designed to be the first stable release of the server for the GNU Free Call project and will be supported for existing applications while the Free Call project develops its new applications. Licensed under the GPL3, the source code is available from the project's FTP directory at gnu.org and will build on Linux, Mac OS X, BSD and Windows. Future releases will also support Android devices says Sugar.

The plan is to use GNU SIP Witch as part of a self-organising, peer-to-peer calling network. Later in the year, the developers plan to set up a web site, powered by GNU SIP Witch, to provide initial worldwide calling services for free. The site will be accessible by any ZRTP-enabled software-based phone or SIP device.
