Debian logo The Debian Project has published an FAQ on patents and patent policy to assist members of the Debian community and other free or open source software communities in navigating the problematic domain of patents. The document was prepared by the Software Freedom Law Center's lawyers at the project's request and covers the state of US law, where many of the patent battles take place.

The document introduces patents, explains what independent and dependent claims are, the different ways a patent can be infringed and how a FOSS project could infringe, defences against infringement and why "willful" infringement means it's better for FOSS developers and contributors not to read patents.
