Just one week after the first release candidate arrived, the Parted Magic developers have released version 5.0 of their open source, multi-platform partitioning tool. Parted Magic can be used to create, move, delete and resize drive partitions and will run on a machine with as little as 64MB of RAM. File systems supported include NTFS, FAT, ReiserFS, Reiser4 and HFS+. LVM and RAID are also supported.

The major update is based on the 2.6.34.1 Linux kernel and features new programs and several updated packages. Package updates include version 0.96.1 of the ClamAV virus scanner, version 4.01 of the Syslinux boot loader collection and the latest 0.6.1 release of the GNOME Partition Editor (GParted). With GParted users can easily create, organise and delete disk partitions using a graphical user interface (GUI).

International language support has also been improved, allowing users to select from English (default), German, French, Italian, Norwegian, Brazilian and Russian from the distribution's boot menu. When a user selects one of the other language options, the default keyboard layout is now also updated. According to Parted Magic developer Patrick Verner, the supported languages were determined by the countries in which the partitioning tool was downloaded the most, noting that "a large number of my cash donors come from Germany, so I have a great interest in supporting this country in any way possible."

More details about the release can be found in the official release announcement and in the change log. Parted Magic 5.0 is available to download as a 99.2 MB ISO image file to run as a LiveCD, or a USB file to run as a LiveUSB. Hosted on SourceForge, Parted Magic is released under version 2 of the GNU General Public License (GPLv2) and documentation is provided.
