Zoom The Pardus 2009.1 desktop.
The Pardus developers have announced the release of Pardus Linux 2009.1. Pardus is a Turkish distribution sponsored by The National Research Institute of Electronics and Cryptology (UEKAE) and includes several unique features: PiSi (Packages Installed Successfully, as Intended), an efficient and small package management system for installing and managing software implemented using Python, and COMAR, their own COnfiguration MAnageR that includes the Mudar init system for Pardus.

Since its inception at the end of 2005, Pardus has used the KDE desktop environment. The latest stable release features version 4.3.4 of the KDE desktop environment and is based on the 2.6.31.11 Linux Kernel . Pardus Linux 2009.1 uses Ext4 as the default file system for newly created partitions, however, XFS, ReiserFS and the experimental Btrfs are also available. Additionally, in the 2009 series, performance improvements have been made to PiSi, which has been updated to make packages about 20 per cent smaller, and the YALI (Yet Another Linux Installer) installation system has also been updated to be more reliable. Package updates include OpenOffice 3.1.1.5, version 3.5.7 of the Firefox web browser and Gimp 2.6.8. Other updated packages include Python 2.6.4 and X.org 1.6.5.

More details about the release can be found in the release notes. Pardus 2009.1 is available to download as a Hybrid ISO image file that supports 11 different languages and can be burned to CD or transferred to a USB memory stick. An Installation Manual is also provided. Pardus is released under version 2 of the GNU General Public License (GPLv2).

Update - An earlier edition of this story contained incorrect version numbers which have since been corrected. The H apologises for the error.
