Palm has started to release developer information on it's new Linux-based Palm OS – WebOS. WebOS will make its debut when the Palm Pre is released later this year. Applications for the smartphone will be written using standard HTML, CSS and JavaScript techniques. A JavaScript API allows access to the devices standard functions and standardised GUI elements. The system manager runs on a Linux kernel as a layer between the hardware, operating system and programs, which run in a browser-like runtime environment. The system is designed to run simultaneous operations from multiple programs at the same time. Palm refers to the applications as "activity cards" and wants users to be able to "flick through" e-mail, maps, photos and websites at the same time, without needing to close anything first.
