The PHP development team have released the PHP 5.3 beta and issued a general invitation to test the new version of the Web programming language. Compared to the previous alpha release, there are fewer new features but it is a large improvement over the original alpha release. According to the ChangeLog the beta release includes about 40 bug fixes and approximately 50 additional revisions and expansions .

Last week the development team indicated that there will be no final releases in the first quarter of the year for PHP version 5.3. The team asks that the beta is tested thoroughly for errors so that they can address any outstanding issues, allowing the final release of 5.3 to be made as close to the planned release date as possible.

In the blog post by Johannes Schlueter regarding the beta release, Schlueter says "Test now and complain or don't test and live with the consequences - we do our best but we certainly can't cover every edge case, especially in a version like 5.3, where we did quite some internal clean up and added tons of new features."
