PCLinuxOS Logo The PCLinuxOS developers have announced the availability of the final version of the 2010 edition of their Linux distribution. The distribution's goal is to be "radically simple" and easy to use. The latest stable release includes a number of updates, new features and a choice of six desktop environments.

PCLinuxOS 2010 features the 2.6.32.11 Linux kernel and support for 3D desktops via Compiz and NVIDIA / ATI fglrx drivers. Package updates include version 3.6.3 of the Firefox web browser, Thunderbird 3.0.4, the 2.6.6 release of the Pidgin IM client and Dropbox for online data backup. Additionally, there are more than 12,000 packages available from the project's software repository.

The developers note that the MyLiveCD ISO creation software that allows users to take a snapshot of their installation and burn it to a LiveCD/DVD has received a major rewrite to better detect devices and that the LiveCD now boots up to 50% faster than previous releases. Other changes include better multimedia playback for popular formats and improved printer, wireless and Bluetooth support.

One of the major changes for this release is the availability of six PCLinuxOS 2010 variants, each with a different desktop environment. In addition to the project's standard KDE release with version 4.4.2 of the KDE desktop, users can choose a GNOME 2.30.0 desktop, the GNOME Zen Mini desktop, LXDE, XFCE or the Enlightenment E-17 desktop.

More details about the release can be found in the release announcement. PCLinuxOS 2010 and its variants are available to download as ISO image files from one of the project's mirrors.
