PCLinuxOS Logo The PCLinuxOS developers have announced the release of the first beta for the 2010 edition of their Linux distribution. The distribution's goal is to be "radically simple" and easy to use. The latest development release includes a number of changes and updates.

The first beta release of PCLinuxOS-2010 features the 2.6.32.8 Linux kernel and version 4.4.1 of the KDE Software Compilation (KDE SC). In addition to a reworked menu system with less sub-categories, the developers note that the mylivecd iso creation software has received a major rewrite to better detect devices and that the LiveCD now boots 50% faster than previous releases.

As with all development releases, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised. Users testing the release are encouraged to report any bugs that they find.

More details about the release, including a list of known issues, can be found in the release announcement. PCLinuxOS 2010 Beta 1 is available to download (direct download) as a 694 MB ISO image file from one of the project's mirrors. The latest stable release is PCLinuxOS 2009.2 from July of last year.
