PCLinuxOS logo One month after the PCLinuxOS beta was released, the PCLinuxOS developers have released version 2009.1. The final release includes the 2.6.26.8 kernel, KDE 3.5.10, Java JRE, Compiz-Fusion 3D, OpenOffice 3.0, Firefox 3.0.7 and Thunderbird 2.0.0.14. The developers decided to use KDE 3.5.10 as their default desktop because the latest version, 4.2, did not provide the functionality that they desired. KDE 4.2, however, is an optional install in the distribution's repositories.

The free Linux distribution's goal is to be "radically simple" and easy to use. PCLinuxOS has a large online repository through the Synaptic Software Manager, which provides a choice of over 8,000 additional packages that can be installed. The system is available on an installable Live CD so that users can try it first before installing it to their systems.

More information about PCLinuxOS can be found on the project's Wiki. Version 2009.1 is available for download now. There is also a community developed GNOME version of PCLinuxOS that uses GNOME version 2.24.3 instead of the KDE desktop environment. The GNOME version has also been updated and released.
