iXsystems has released Version 1.5 of its free PC-BSD operating system. Based on FreeBSD 6.3, the free Unix spin-off, and designed for desktop use, this system uses KDE 3.5.8 as a desktop and is available for 32- and 64-bit systems (2 CDs each). PC-BSD 1.5 provides a new update tool that allows administrators to set up their own update server. The routine that identifies the sound card is also new. The Firewall Manager and the installation tool for WLAN cards have been improved, and the new AMD64 version is claimed to improve performance on 64-bit systems from Intel and AMD.

The hardware demands made by PC-BSD 1.5 are moderate: the system is satisfied with 256 megabytes of RAM and 4 gigabytes of disk space, and the processor should be at least a Pentium II. The release notes contain a complete list of the packages supplied.
